The World Population Policies Database provides information on government views and policies on seven major topics: (1) population size and growth; (2) population age structure; (3) fertility; (4) reproductive health and family planning; (5) health; (6) spatial distribution and internal migration; and (7) international migration.
Information on a total of 59 policy variables, covering these seven topics, has been gathered since the mid-1970s. These variables can be divided into three basic types of policy questions addressed: (i) Government views and concerns to assess the policy significance of selected population issues; (ii) Government intentions and objectives with respect to selected population parameters; and (iii) legal and programmatic measures adopted by governments to influence the levels or direction of selected population parameters.
