Hybrid photovoltaic system in Agalega Island

  • Executing agency: UN/DESA Division for Sustainable Development
  • Senior advisor: Mr. Jayarao Gururaja
  • Start date: 1 October 1998
  • Total budget: USD 80,000

The project provides photovoltaic equipment to supply electricity to fifteen houses in the atoll of Agalega, which forms part of the Mauritian territory and lies about 1,000 km to the north of the main island. The present output from generators does not cover the needs of the residents, and the project will complement efforts to electrify the island, paving the way for the eventual introduction of a greater number of appliances in the island, including the operation of TV sets and VCR’s, thus helping to enhance quality of life and attenuate the geographic remoteness of the site.
