Armenia
A zero ("0") indicates that the value is zero. Two dots ".." indicate that no migrants were reported, either because the number was small and was combined with other countries into the category "Other" or because the country did not exist at the time the data were reported.
 
     
Australia
Due to privacy concerns estimates have been rounded to the nearest 10. As a result, totals may not add up. Differences between the sum by countries and the totals are included in the category "Other and unknown". Figures may be negative due to the adjustments.
 
The entry "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland " include Channel Islands and Isle of Man.
 
Australia is listed as country of previous and next residence because of the Australian external territories that are not considered to be within geographic Australia. In 1992, Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, the source and destination of most movements between Australia and its external territories, became part geographic Australia.

Austria
Due to high level of underreporting by citizens, data by country of previous or next residence are limited to foreign citizens.
 
 
The data for 2002 to 2007 have been corrected retroactively and thus do not necessarily correspond to those published in the Demographic Yearbook of Austria.

Azerbaijan
From 1995 to 1997, emigration flows to countries outside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) include only persons 18 years and over.

Belarus

Belgium
Until 1994, asylum-seekers were included in the immigration total, but not by country of citizenship. Since 1995, asylum-seekers are no longer considered as part of the legal population until their asylum application has been approved. Recognized asylum-seekers are included in the total, but not reported by country of citizenship.

Bulgaria

Croatia

Cyprus

Czech Republic

For the years 2001 and 2009, the "Other" category includes persons with unknown origin or destination.
 
     
Denmark

Estonia
For quality reasons, international migration statistics are not available before 2004. 
 
 
Differences between the sum of the country data and the totals are included in the category "unknown".
 
 
A zero ( "0") indicates that the value is zero.
 
     
Finland
A zero ("0") indicates that the value is zero, not available or not applicable.
     
France
Since 2003, foreign citizens from the then 15 Member States of the European Union are no longer required to hold a residence permit . According to estimates from the Institut National D'Etudes Demographiques (INED), the number of immigrants from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway amounted to 40,000 annually during the period 2004 to 2007. As the estimates are not available by country of citizenship, these immigrants are reported under "Other Europe". The number of immigrating Swiss citizens was estimated at 2,000 annually during the period 2005 to 2007.
 
 
Since 2006, the category Other Europe includes estimates for immigration from Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia, who joined the European Union in 2004.
 
 
In 2006 and 2007, the category "Yugoslavia (former)" includes immigrants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
 
 
Differences between the sum of the country data and the totals for Europe have been included in "Other Europe".

Germany
Cyprus is included in Europe until 1999 and in Asia since 2000.
 
In 2008, significant discrepancies were detected in the emigration data, which are derived from the population register. As these discrepancies could not be corrected retroactively, they were incorporated in the data for 2008 and 2009, affecting the validity of Germany's longitudinal emigration data.
 
 
For the years 1990 to 1994, the differences in the totals by country of residence and by country of citizenship are due to the fact that the category Unknown was excluded from the former series, but included in the latter.
 
 
The data have been adjusted to ensure they add up to the totals. The differences as a result of these adjustments were included in the category "Unknown" or "Other major area".

Greece

Hungary
The value zero ( "0") indicates that the value is zero.
     
Iceland
International migration data are published for the year the registration or de-registration took place. Due to the delays in the registration of international migrants, figures for 2007 and 2008 were adjusted retroactively.

Ireland
The category "European Union-15" refers to the 15 Member States of the European Union (EU) before the enlargement in 2004 i.e., Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The data by citizenship exclude citizens of Ireland.
 
 
The category  "European Union-12" refers to the ten states that joined the European Union (EU) in 2004, that is, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia as well as the two states, Bulgaria and Romania, that joined the EU in 2007.
 
 
Figures are rounded to the nearest hundred or thousand. Therefore, totals do not add up.

Israel
The data have been adjsted to ensure they add up to the totals. The differences as a result of these adjustments were included in the category "Other".
 
 
Immigrants from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden are reported under "Nordic countries".
 
 
Immigrants from Pakistan and Sri Lanka are included under "India".
 
 
Immigrants from Australia and New Zealand are reported under "Australia and New Zealand".
 
 
Immigrants in the category "Other Latin America and the Caribbean" include immigrants reported under the categories "Other America and Oceania" and "Central America".
 
 
Since 2002, immigrants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan,  Kyrgyzstan,  Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are reported under " USSR (former) - Asian countries", while immigrants from Belarus, The Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation, Ukraine and the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) are reported under "USSR (former) - European countries".
 
 
The category "USSR (former) unknown" was included in the total for Europe.

Italy
The number of countries by citizenship reported for 1991 to 1997, 2001 and 2006 to 2008 is much smaller than for the other years. As a result, the categories of Other Africa, Other Asia, Other Latin America and the Caribbean, Other Europe and other Oceania for these years are much larger and thus difficult to compare over time.

Kazakhstan

Kyrgyzstan

Latvia
Data by citizenship have been corrected to ensure that the totals added up.

Lithuania
The emigration data greatly underestimate actual emigration, because they are based on the declared intentions of persons to emigrate. A survey carried out by Statistics Lithuania has indicated that undeclared emigration exceeded declared emigration during 2001-2006. The percentage of undeclared emigration dropped to 37 per cent in 2009.

Luxembourg
A zero ("0") indicates that the value is zero.
 
     
Netherlands
The emigration data by country of birth and by country of citizenship include administrative corrections since 1977 and, as a result, may include negative figures.
 
The Netherlands is listed as a country of previous residence for asylum-seekers whose country of previous residence is unknown.
 
 
A zero ("0") indicates that the value is zero. Two dots ".." indicate that no migrants were reported, either because the number was small and was combined with other countries into the category "Other" or because the country did not exist at the time the data were reported.
 
     
New Zealand
International migrants from or to territories that are not part of the United Nations standard classification of countries are included in the category Other, including  Antarctica, British Indian Ocean Territory, French Southern Territories and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island are included in Australia. The United States Minor Outlying Islands are included in the United States of America.

Norway
Emigration data underestimate the actual number of persons moving abroad.  Based on survey data, emigration data have been corrected for the years 1993 to 1998.
 
 
International migration to and from Faeroe Islands and Greenland are reported separately from Denmark.
 
 
International migration to and from Spanish territory in Africa are included in "Other Africa". International migration to and from the British Indian Ocean Territory are included in "Other Asia".
 
 
Migration to and from Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands are included in the category Other Oceania.

Poland
For the data by country of citizenship, differences between the published and the actual total are included under Other.

United Kingdom
All figures are rounded to the nearest thousands or hundreds. Therefore, totals do not add up.
 
 
Since 1988, migration between the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man and the rest of the world are not included.
 
 
The Old Commonwealth is defined as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. The New Commonwealth is defined as Other African Commonwealth, Indian subcontinent, and Other Commonwealth countries in the Asia, the Caribbean and Oceania. Up to 2003, Cyprus and Malta were included in the New Commonwealth. Since 2004, they have been included in the European Union.
 
 
Other African Commonwealth includes Botswana, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
 
 
Other Non-Commonwealth is defined as the remainder of Europe, United States of America, the remainder of America, the Middle East and the non-Commonwealth parts of Africa, Asia, and Oceania that are not listed separately.
 
 
"European Union-15" refers to the following Member States: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
 
 
"European Union-8" refers to the following Member States: Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia
 
 
"Other European Union" refers to Malta and Cyprus (since 2004), as well as Bulgaria and Romania (since 2007).
 
 
"Other Europe" is defined as Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Croatia, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Republic of Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Monaco, Norway, Russian Federation, San Marino, Serbia and Montenegro (former), Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine. Before 2007 it included Bulgaria and Romania.
 
 
"Other Latin America and the Caribbean" includes Argentina, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of).
 
 
"Other Middle East" includes Bahrain, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Before 1977, these countries were included in "Other countries".
 
 
South Africa is shown under "Non-Commonwealth Countries" until 1994 and under "Commonwealth" from 1995 onwards.
 
 
Pakistan is included in "Non-Commonwealth" countries from 1973 to 1988, and in "Commonwealth" countries from 1989 onwards. In 1970, 1971 and 1992, Pakistan was added to the category labelled "Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka".
 
 
Included under the subtotal "More developed regions" are migrants from or to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the European Union, Other European countries and the United States of America. "Less developed regions" include migrants from all other countries or areas.
 
 
The major area "Asia" includes the entries for "Other Commonwealth" and "Other Non-Commonwealth".

United States of America
Data refer to fiscal years. Before 1976, the fiscal year started on 1 July of the year shown and ran until 30 June of the following year. Since 1976, the fiscal year starts on 1 October of the year shown and runs until 30 September of the following year. Because of the transition, fiscal year 1976 includes an extra quarter.
 
 
Until 2008, immigrants from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Republic of Korea were included under Republic of Korea.
