  • Executing agency: UN/DESA Statistics Division
  • Senior advisor: Mr. Sirageldin H. Suliman
  • Start date: 1 October 1997
  • Partners: Government of the United Republic of Tanzania; UNFPA
  • Total budget: USD 620,881

This project is funded by UNFPA. Other donors may also provide assistance to conduct the census. The project objective is to ensure the maintenance of decennial censuses and availability of time-series of population benchmark data at various geographic levels as well as the development of coordinated and integrated data collection in the country. To achieve these objectives, the services of an international consultant in cartography were provided two times, each for one month as well as data processing and cartographic/office equipment was purchased. An Intercountry advisor on Census and UNFPA Country Support Team in Addis Ababa were fielded several times for technical review and to attend Round Table Donors Conference for providing general guidance for the project. The census was postponed to August 2002 due to funding problems. The total budget and the work plan are being revised to reflect the new date for the census.
