The development objective of this project is to reduce adverse social, envirnmental and economic consequences associated with traffic pollution in Guangzhou city. In view of the uniquely high Nox levels in Guangzhou, the primary focus of the project will be on this pollution. The project is to provide an understanding about the nature of the Nox problems in the Guangzhou area by establishing an emission inventory; to recommend a policy for vehicular-based Nox emissions control; and to develop the capacity of local government officials to deal with this pollutant. As part of a national programme for air pollution, the experience gained through the implementation of this project will be disseminated to all other cities in China facing pollution problems similar to those of Guangzhou.
