Profile:

Meryem Demirci joined the United Nations in September 2009 as Interregional Advisor on Population and Housing Censuses. She is available for short-term technical assistance to regions, sub-regions and countries planning to undertake a census during the 2010 Round. Prior to her assignment in New York, she was the head of Population and Demography Group at the Turkish Statistical Institute. She participated in all stages of the 2000 Population and Housing Census of Turkey as chief of the Census Division. She has experience on data processing; data analysis and evaluation particularly in case of using optical data capture (OCR/ICR) system. Recently, she worked on developing a new system for the 2011 population and housing census based on administrative registers in Turkey. She was actively involved in establishing the population registration system and improving the system for census topics. She also worked for planning, implementing and evaluating the field work for checking the data quality available in the population registration system. In addition, she has experience on producing national and sub-national population projections. During her professional career, she maintained her research interests in different methods for conducting population and housing censuses and prepared theses and several articles on evaluation of data quality of vital events, the social and economic factors affecting internal migration. She is a member of Population Association of Turkey.
