National Cleaner Production Centers (NCPCs)

National Cleaner Production Centers (NCPCs) have been established in Jordan, Lebanon. With the support of UNIDO, NCPC will raise the awareness of sustainable consumption and production; train local experts and build local capacity for sustainable production; provide technical assistance to individual enterprises; support development of project proposals related to cleaner development; disseminate technical information; and provide policy support to governments.

  • Training workshop on energy efficient technologies, clean fuel and sustainable mobility at Middle East and North African Renewable Energy Conference (MENARECIII) and Green Industry Conference, coordinated by UNEP
  • Training workshop on Cleaner production and sustainable consumption, EMS, IEM, APELL, coordinated by UNEP
  • Training workshop on Integrated Chemicals and Waste Management at International conference on chemicals management, and workshops on hazardous waste, coordinated by UNEP
  • Training workshop on sustainable construction and sustainable tourism, coordinated by UNEP
  • Training workshop on wastewater treatment and solid waste management, coordinated by UNEP
  • A clearing house as part of a global Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFC), with support the region to develop new policy approaches to promote less polluting fuels, hosted by UNEP
  • YouthXchange demo project in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, led by Marrakech Task Force on Sustainable Lifestyles
  • Abu Dhabi Initiative (ADI), 2005, on integrated management of water resources.

Needs and priorities related to SCP in West Asia are focusing in the sectors of Energy, Water and Waste.

Energy

  • Low energy efficiency practices

Water

  • Highest level of water scarcity and water stress
  • Inefficient water use
  • Salinisation resulting from poor irrigation
  • Low quality of water and serious water sanitation

Waste

  • Uncontrolled waste dumping site
  • Inadequate waste management
  • Lack of enforcement of waste management legislation
  • Serious illegal dumping of industrial waste as well as discharge of industrial wastewater
  • Lack of awareness on waste issue
