A Marrakech Task Force on Cooperation with Africa has been established with the support of the German Government and in cooperation with the African Roundtable on SCP. The Task Force has implemented a number of pilot projects in Africa, including Eco-Labelling, National SCP Programmes in Egypt, Mauritius, Mozambique and Tanzania,Best-Practices by Development Agencies in Africa, and a Study on Opportunities for Leapfrogging.
The African Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production (ARSCP) is a multi-stakeholder forum promoting SCP in Africa. Its activities include:
Development of national SCP programmes has either been completed or is ongoing in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Egypt, Mozambique, Mauritius, Senegal and Ghana. A national roundtable in South Africa is planned for June 2008.
National Cleaner Production Centers (NCPCs) have been established in Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. With the support of UNIDO, NCPCs are providing technical assistance and capacity building to their countries. The application of cleaner production can significantly improve the competitiveness of industry and reduce the negative environmental impact of existing production processes due to the efficient use of water, energy and raw materials.
African needs and priorities related to SCP have been identified in the meeting reports of regional consultative meetings organized under the Marrakech Process.
