Meetings - Regional Meetings

The objective of the 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is to support SCP initiatives at the regional and national levels. In order to achieve this link, a consultative process has been developed in each region. This effort aims at supporting each region to:

  • Define SCP priorities at the sub-regional and regional levels;
  • Develop, review and strengthen the agreed regional strategy and action plan on sustainable consumption and production;
  • Strengthen regional institutions that support activities on SCP;
  • Build more cooperation between the regions and the Marrakech Task Forces, and other implementing partners;
  • Provide input from the region on the elaboration of the 10-year framework of programmes on SCP; and
  • Prepare a report or communiqué to be endorsed by a ministerial-level body within the region.

Arab States

The first regional consultation on SCP in the Arab States is being organized by the League of Arab States, UNEP Regional Office for West Asia, and the UN Economic and Social Commission for West Asia, in cooperation with UNEP DTIE and UNDESA. This multi-stakeholder consultation will be held from 17-19 March 2008 in the United Arab Emirates.

The main objectives of the meeting are to:

  • Identify key regional priorities on sustainable consumption and production that will serve as inputs to the development of a regional action plan on SCP
  • Describe on-going initiatives on SCP in the region
  • Contribute to the Marrakech Process providing regional feedback on the elaboration of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on SCP and
  • Building more cooperation between the region and the Marrakech Task Forces, and other stakeholders such as development agencies, business and NGOs
