About - Development Cooperation Dialogue

Many projects of development agencies promote SCP through environmental regulations, economic instruments, capacity building for sustainable product development and resource efficiency. For example:
  • The Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) funded a project to establish certification bodies for organic agricultural products in Uganda and Tanzania (2002-2007), to increase organic farming in the countries and income opportunities for farmers and traders.
  • The European Commission funded a regional partnership “Bolsa Amazônia”, dedicated to developing small-scale enterprises in rural forest communities in Amazonia. One of its projects has created new jobs benefiting some 5,200 people, and supplies 120,000 recyclable car seats a month to DaimlerChrysler.

:: Leading to the development of SCP projects

The Development Cooperation Dialogue is a space created within the Marrakech Process to engage development cooperation agencies and experts in sustainable consumption and Production. It is intended to lead to the development, funding and implementation of sustainable consumption and production projects, and to explore how development agencies can become an effective mechanism of implementation for the Marrakech Process.

:: Agencies take sectoral approaches

Development agencies are already working on issues related to sustainable consumption and production, but generally through sectoral approaches. Many agencies, for example, are working on energy efficiency, waste management, and water resource management and sanitation issues, which are linked to sustainable consumption and production.

:: Outreach to financial institutions

At the Third International Expert Meeting, experts recommended that the spectrum of development cooperation partners and potential financing sources for SCP activities should be broadened, possibly to include regional and national development banks and financial institutions, foundations, and interested commercial banks.
